filterco string wound cartridge filters - beginnings

We all know companies don't start themselves, even with AI someone had to write the code. So I figure a good place to start is with Me, Greg Bates. In 1971 I was working for W R Grace Chemical Company as an hourly worker. I was also taking night classes at Brescia College in accounting. W R Grace paid very well, when I tell you the hourly rate, remember this was in 1971, and I was making $3.25 per hour. I Finished my degree requirements in December 1976 and walked graduation in May 1977. I continued working at W R Grace and sending out resume's. Interviewed with Commercial Filters Division of the Carborundum Company. I didn't get the job. But two weeks later I got a call from the person I had interviewed with at the Tell City plant. It seems the person who first was offered the job turned it down. I started with Commercial Filters in Tell City, Indiana two weeks later. Working at Commercial Filters was a lot of long days getting to know how manufacturing accounting is done. It was nothing like accounting I learned in college. I was a general accountant. I did all the costing for the string wound filters (HFT's) and raw materials, calculated winders weekly payroll, and calculated the piece work rate for all string wound filters. I also produced reports for labor effeciency, scrap loss and the dreaded month end closing. I loved it all. I can't take all the credit, I had the best boss and teacher. His name is Bob Coomes, same person who called me back with job offer. We both lived in Owensboro, Ky and rode to and from work together. For 45 minutes each way I would get schooled in how accounting and manufacturing really worked, nothing like text book accounting. During our drive he would ask me questions, "How would you do this?" If I didn't get the right answer, He had a one word answer, "WRONG" and laugh. We did this for 5 years. Bob taught me accounting and I learned more in those trips to and from work then all the accounting classes in college. He also instilled in me a great sense of self confidence.
